Study Permits


Canada hosts thousands of students.  Students who wish to pursue an education in Canada will be admitted by a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).  Most Foreign Nationals will also require Study Permit.  Study Permits are regulated under the Temporary Residence Class.

DLI Eligibility Criteria

 

DLI’s have their own specific admission criteria and standards.  However, some common requirements may include the following:

  • Language Requirements: The two official languages of Canada are English and French. You may be required to demonstrate language proficiency skills in either language. Proficiency skills may be proven by testing through certification programs, such as: International English Language Testing System (IELTS);  Teaching of English as a foreign Language (TOEFL);  The Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP)Test d’évaluation de Français (TEF); or, Test de Connaissance du Français (TCF).  You must confirm the language requirements of the DLI you wish to attend
  • Application Deadlines: Some DLI’s may have strict application deadlines for foreign and/or domestic students.  You must meet any admission application deadlines
  • Entrance Exams: Some DLIs may have entrance exams for your intended field of study. You must confirm if any entrance exams are required prior to submitting your admission application

You must meet all eligibility requirements to apply for a study permit. The following are the most important requirements:

 

  • You must be enrolled at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada
  • You must prove that you are financially capable to cover all your costs, which include:
    • Tuition fees for your intended field of study courses;
    • Living expenses for yourself (andyour accompanying family members – if applicable); and,
    • Return travel expenses for yourself (andyour accompanying family members – if applicable)
  • You must obey the laws of Canada and have no criminal record – a Police Clearance Certificate may be required
  • You must be in good physical health – a medical exam may be required
  • You must provide proof to an officer dealing with your case that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires
