General Overview of Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

The FSWP program is for skilled workers who want to become permanent residents and are qualified in a skilled trade. 


The following program eligibility criteria apply:

 

  • have valid job offers of continuous, paid, full-time employment (at least 30 hours a week) from up to two employers in Canada for at least one year OR a certificate of qualification from a Provincial or Territorial authority
  • provide proof of basic language proficiency from a designated language testing organization, demonstrating that the applicant meets the minimum threshold – CLB=4 (speaking and listening) and CLB =5 (reading and writing)
  • have obtained 2 years of full-time work experience OR an equal amount of part-time work in the skilled trade in the five years before applying
  • ability to demonstrate the skills and experience and that you performed the essential duties of the occupation (as specified in the NOC)
  • must plan to reside outside the Province of Quebec

FSTP has specific skilled work experience eligibility criteria in the following NOC categories:

 

  • Major Group 72: industrial, electrical and construction trades
  • Major Group 73: maintenance and equipment operation trades
  • Major Group 82: supervisors and technical jobs in natural resources, agriculture and related production
  • Major Group 92: processing, manufacturing and utilities supervisors and central control operators
  • Minor Group 632: chefs and cooks
  • Minor Group 633: butchers and bakers

Education: There is no educational requirement for this program.  However, you can be awarded points for secondary or post-secondary education. Level of education of proof is required through secondary or post-secondary school certificate, diploma or degree. If such credentials were acquired from outside Canada, then the applicant must have an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report for immigration purposes from a designated organization, showing that your education is equal to a completed certificate, diploma or degree from a Canadian educational institution at a secondary or post-secondary school level.
